ED553E – Developing a Theory of Practice: Learning & Museums

(or – what is it and why are we doing it?)

The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge they need to understand both the theoretical and professional issues with regards to learning in museums. This includes (but is not limited to): formal, informal and free-choice learning; learning in both regulatory and curriculum-based contexts; working with minors and vulnerable members of society; developing relationships between the community and the museum; and the promotion of social inclusion.

The aim of the e-portfolio is to show that the student has understood the role that museums play in learning, both from a practical perspective as well as by siting their understanding within the current academic landscape. The key objective of the assessment for this module is to ‘demonstrate your ability to reflect on and evaluate your own learning’1 through the provision of a portfolio showing how the student has progressed on their own ‘learning journey’ during the course. This should include a weekly update covering readings and seminars and could be through the format of text, video or images, notes; any relevant supporting material can be included.

The e-portfolio will also be drawn upon when completing the 3500 word reflective essay which forms the second part of the assessment for this course.

Both the e-portfolio and reflective essay are due on the 8th June 2018.
